Andy Winn, professionally known as ‘Drawne Up’, is a staple figure of York’s thriving art scene.
Born in York, Andy went on to study Graphic Design and Creative Imaging at Huddersfield University. Following his degree, he lived and worked in Ukraine, Ghana and Vietnam at various points over the years. Most recently, he put down roots in Porto, Portugal for five years, where he established a thriving artist collective, Squid Ink Works, and continued to expand the scope of his practise. In 2023, he returned to York and joined Pica Studios, an artist-led studio and workshop space, home to a vibrant creative hub of over 20 local artists.
Working in relief printmaking with linoleum, wood and letterpress, Andy produces vivid, high contrast prints of subjects ranging from architecture, to the natural world, all with a strong graphic tendency. His work often incorporates aspects of typography, humour and repetition, with influences from his travels, particularly Portugal. Motifs synonymous with the country often appear in Andy’s prints, such as sardines and traditional Portuguese tiles.
Ever curious and experimental, Andy offers a fresh perspective on scenes and objects that may otherwise feel familiar. His work is instantly eye catching, with a draughtsman-like attention to detail, frequently offset by playful or subversive undertones. Each of his designs displays the expertise and ability of his craft, for which he is admired by his peers and collectors alike. Bold, exuberant and brimming with hidden details, Andy’s work possesses an irresistible appeal.
